Lasting relationships with supplier factories: Response from Pentland

Summary: Pentland recognises the benefits of long-term relationships with supply factories, but refuses to commit to setting firm targets.

Pentland stated: “Our ability to work with our suppliers depends on a strong business relationship. If the relationship is a long term one then management can begin to build in the changes to the development plan, knowing that the business is likely to continue.”

Play Fair’s view:

Pentland must take a more systematic approach to delivering on commitments to building long-term relationships with its suppliers. One useful step could be to incentivise shifts in labour rights improvements by increasing orders and committing to long-term relationships with suppliers who take steps towards this goal. This would ensure systemically that suppliers and brands work together to support transitions and changes. Progress on building these long-term relationships should be reported on publicly.
