Playfair 2012 student speaker tour, 10-16th October 2011

poster In October, Turkish trade union activist Asalettin Arslanoglu will be touring UK universities to share first hand stories of life in the Turkish textile sector and workers’ struggles to win decent working conditions.

Asalettin is Director of Organising, at the Textile Knitting and Clothing Workers’ Union of Turkey and has regular contact with  workers making merchandise for the London 2012 Olympics and leading sportswear brands including Adidas and Nike.

Touring with the speaker will be a photo exhibition detailing the daily lives and experiences of workers in Cambodia producing Adidas goods for the Olympics, by the photo journalist Will Baxter.

You are invited to come to join us.

Events will take place at: UCL, ULU, LSE, University of Newcastle (TBC) and UEA. There will also be a public meeting in London. Read more…

Work is a four letter word. Most of us can’t live without it, many struggle to survive it.  So what do we want? Decent work  – sufficient pay, safe conditions, security of employment, and freedom of association.

Is that really too much to ask?

From the Jarrow Marchers to today’s sweatshop slaves and hard working farmers across the globe, the demands for a decent wage echo through the generations. This year, to mark ‘World Day for Decent Work’ Fairtrade campaigners, trade unionists and anti-sweatshop activists have come together to host a mini film festival in Newcastle on this issue. Adidas letter: Our response

The Playfair 2012 campaign previously wrote to Stella McCartney, who has been commissioned to design a range of Adidas clothing for London 2012, with a request to meet her to discuss our campaign and work with Adidas to improve working conditions in their supply chains. World Cup 2014: strike in Mineirao Stadium ends

sidelogo-brazilThe strike at the renovation of Mineirão stadium, in Belo Horizonte finished on June 20. The strike started last Wednesday and the workers demanded wage increase and better working conditions. The strike came to an end after the workers have approved an agreement proposed by the Regional Labour Court of Minas Gerais (MG-TRT). Read more…
